How to use the Markdown translator

  1. 01

    Choose an MD file

Open a UTF-8 Markdown file up to 10 MB. Check its contents for code blocks, links, front matter, or placeholders that need separate technical review.

  2. 02

    Translate the text

Select the source and target languages, review the paragraphs, and start on-device translation. Markdown syntax is treated as text, not as protected markup.

  3. 03

    Save a text draft

Download the translated TXT file and compare it with the original MD. Review and restore Markdown syntax before using the translation in a README, documentation site, or repository.

Translate Markdown file text for reading and review

Markdown is common in documentation, README files, notes, and article drafts. When you receive an MD file in another language, opening it as a document can be easier than copying many sections into a translation box. This Markdown translator shows the source text and a translated draft side by side so you can follow the meaning and decide what needs editing.

The current output is a plain-text TXT file. It is useful for understanding a document or preparing wording for a human editor. It is not a publish-ready localization pipeline. Keep the original Markdown as your structural reference, then transfer reviewed wording back into the source format using your usual editor and preview tools.

Markdown markup needs a separate check

This tool reads Markdown as text. It does not parse the file into a syntax tree or protect code fences, YAML front matter, link destinations, image paths, template variables, or inline code from translation. The translation model may alter those strings. Do not assume that a result which reads well is safe to render or commit as Markdown.

For technical documentation, prepare a prose-only working copy if practical. After translation, compare headings, lists, emphasis markers, and links with the original. Restore any code samples from the source rather than trusting translated code. Check image alternative text separately from its file path: the descriptive words may need translation, while the path often needs to remain exactly the same.

A practical workflow for documentation drafts

Start with a small file and choose the language used in its prose. Read the extracted paragraphs before translating so you can see how blank lines and markup appear. Compare each translated section with its heading and nearby context. Product names, command-line flags, identifiers, and established project terminology often need to stay consistent even when the surrounding sentence changes.

Download the TXT draft, review the wording, and then restore the Markdown structure in an editor. Render the finished MD file with your documentation system before publishing. Follow links, inspect lists and tables, and run the project's normal checks. This page handles the translation draft; those final checks belong with the documentation workflow where the content will be used.

File limits, languages, and privacy

This page accepts UTF-8 MD files up to 10 MB. The language selectors include English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. A compatible desktop Chrome version and a supported Translator API language pair are required. A first-time language-pack download may be needed before translation can begin.

Your Markdown file is read in the browser and is not uploaded by this website. There is no account, app installer, or server-side translation step. If your file is plain prose without Markdown markup, the TXT translator provides the same local workflow with a plain-text input filter.

Markdown translation FAQ

Can I translate a Markdown file online?

Yes. Open an MD file on this page and translate its text using compatible desktop Chrome. You can compare the source and target text and download a TXT draft.

Does this preserve Markdown syntax?

Markdown is treated as plain text, so syntax, code blocks, links, front matter, and placeholders are not protected. Review and restore those elements before publishing or committing a translated Markdown file.

Is the download an MD file?

The current download is UTF-8 TXT. Use it as a translation draft, then restore the original Markdown structure in your editor if you need a publishable MD file.

Will code examples be translated?

They may be altered because the tool does not separate code from prose. Use a prose-only copy when possible and restore code examples from the original during review.

Do I need an account or an extension?

No. The tool runs on this page without registration or a browser extension. Translation needs compatible desktop Chrome and an available on-device language pair.
